After dancing for Holi with the locals, I came across Rafi, a friendly Muslim who wasn't celebrating the Hindu festival, and thus was on-the-job looking for a sales commission. He was very friendly, asked where I was from, how long I was here for, and what I'd be doing during my stay. I didn't really know. Well, he suggested, I should come up to the "government" tourist office where they have free maps and brochures and lots of ideas.
So I followed Rafi into a building I can only describe as slummy, up a narrow dilapidated stairway into a cramped room packed with three men lounging and chatting. Should these guys pull knives or anything, there was no quick exit; so I shrugged and rolled with it. It turns out the place was a perfectly respectable tour outfit and I booked a 3-day tour with them. A couple people had recommended this as the way to travel in India: a private driver.
Sodhi met me at 6:30 the next morning and we were on our way to Jaipur. It's a solid four to six hours of road time between each of the three destinations of this trip: Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra-- "The Golden Triangle." So I had plenty of time to see the countryside, the marvels of Indian driving, the perils of crossing the road there, and, of course, an endless population of people.
Got a monkey on my back!
Sharing the road with hand-painted trucks and hand-painted elephants. . .
See the dancing bear? In the middle, by the women dressed in sari.
